Unleashing the Power of Hormonal Balance in Cancer Prevention

Cancer, a global menace and a leading cause of death continues to rise despite significant investments in the industry. Astonishingly, only 5–10% of cancer cases stem from genetic defects, while 90–95% are linked to environmental and lifestyle factors. In this guide, discover actionable steps to significantly reduce cancer risk, focusing on optimizing hormone levels.

Step #1:  Optimize Hormone Levels

Hormonal balance is your best ally in the prevention of cancer. Because hormones play such a wide array of roles in your body, it would be impossible to mention all the possible symptoms of hormonal imbalance; however, unexpected fatigue, night sweats, low libido, infertility, breast tissue changes (male and female), irregular menstruation, and excessive body hair (female), are all red flags that should not be ignored. Pay attention to your body and see a healthcare practitioner if things don’t seem right. You can also purchase a wide range of highly accurate hormone test kits here.

The following hormones play key roles in cancer risk:

Estrogen

We often hear about estrogen deficiency in menopausal women; however, thanks to several dietary, environmental and lifestyle factors, estrogen dominance is a far more common problem in both males and females of all ages. A high level of estrogen, or a high estrogen-to-progesterone ratio, markedly increases the risk for breast, ovarian, and uterine cancer. And high estrogen levels without enough testosterone to counterbalance its effects can increase the risk for colon cancer in men.

You can help keep estrogen levels in check by vastly reducing your intake of meat, dairy, and soy products, reducing stress, exercising, maintaining a healthy body weight, and using natural cleaning and personal care products.  Oral contraceptives are also a major contributor to estrogen dominance, and you might want to consider a natural alternative such as the rhythm method in combination with withdrawal.

When it comes to the prevention and reversal of estrogen dominance, the compounds DIM (Diindolylmethane) and I3C (Indole 3-carbinol) are absolute superstars. DIM and I3C are naturally found in cruciferous vegetables, but it would be nearly impossible to just eat veggies to get a high enough dose of these compounds to reverse estrogen dominance. The proprietary supplements, 16aOHE Inhibitor and Estroblock Pro, contain the equivalent amount of DIM and I3C to that found in ten pounds of cruciferous vegetables. If you have estrogen dominance symptoms, or you are overweight or on the birth control pill (and stopping is not an option for you), I highly recommend you take one of these supplements daily.

Testosterone

There is a great deal of controversy surrounding the androgenic hormone testosterone and its effects on cancer. Many believe testosterone can accelerate prostate cancer development; however, recent research has challenged this view. Two studies were conducted where androgen treatment was given to terminal prostate cancer patients, and the participants who received the androgen therapy enjoyed a higher quality of life and survived longer than the participants who were not given the androgens.

Hormone and anti-aging lifestyle medicine expert Dr. Thierry Hertoghe also points out that there is emerging data that suggests it’s not the presence of androgenic hormones that promotes prostate cancer. On the contrary, it is the decline of these hormones that often occurs with age that allows for the formation of prostate cancer cells (especially when estrogen levels are high). According to a study published in the BMC Cancer Journal, when testosterone levels fall below a critical level, normal prostate cells become mutated and can turn cancerous. Theoretically, if testosterone therapy is started before reaching this critical threshold, the development of prostate cancer could be prevented.

Optimized testosterone levels may also help reduce the risk of colon cancer because testosterone helps to balance out the effects of estrogen. So men with estrogen dominance or low testosterone levels may want to consider using Testrogenesis cream and/or taking TestroVida Pro to help safely and effectively boost their testosterone. Exercising regularly and including strength-building exercises, getting regular sunlight and high-quality sleep, maintaining optimal zinc levels, keeping estrogen levels in check, and reducing stress will also help to boost testosterone levels.

I highly recommend the above natural methods as a preventive measure against cancer; however, androgen therapy in patients who have already developed prostate cancer is still highly controversial and should never be done without strict monitoring. “It is incumbent upon the physician to explain the pros and cons of testosterone therapy to their testosterone-deficient male patients and let them decide for themselves,” warns Dr. Hertoghe. “These circumstances require very close monitoring and discontinuation of therapy if any acceleration of prostate cancer occurs.”

Melatonin

Melatonin helps to reduce cancer risk in three ways: by metabolizing estrogens, by fighting inflammation, and by supporting healthy immunity. Melatonin is particularly beneficial for the prevention of breast cancer. Renowned cancer researcher Dr. David E. Blask found that melatonin can actually put breast cancer cells to sleep, and nighttime melatonin levels in the blood can slow breast cancer growth by 70%! In order to optimize melatonin production, you need to get enough high-quality sleep. Make sure your room is dark and quiet (or use white noise, keep electronics out of the bedroom, eliminate caffeine, avoid spicy foods and blue light 2-3 hours before bed, and try to keep your sleep-wake schedule consistent. If you have trouble falling asleep, you can boost your melatonin by getting 15 minutes of sunlight exposure daily (or using a sunlamp), and consuming melatonin-containing foods such as goji berries, walnuts, almonds, pineapple, and bananas as bedtime snacks.

Thyroid Hormones

Recent research suggests low levels of thyroid hormones can also increase your risk for various types of cancer, including colon, lung, prostate, and breast cancer. This correlation is likely because thyroid hormones stimulate immunity and can, therefore, protect against the growth and proliferation of cancer cells.

Step #2: Reduce Inflammation

Inflammation is a widely accepted contributor to cancer. Chronic inflammation causes damage to your cells, DNA, and tissues, and creates the perfect environment for cancerous cells to grow, multiply and spread. Chronic Inflammation is a very common condition that can be caused by many things, including excess body weight, smoking, allergies, food intolerances, lack of exercise, an unhealthy diet, and stress.

If you want to reduce inflammation, you should vastly reduce or eliminate alcohol, sugar, caffeine, oils, burned fats, dairy, factory-farmed meat, smoked meat, and processed and packaged foods. Consuming foods that you are intolerant to will also fuel the inflammation fire, and if you suspect you may have intolerances, you can purchase an IgG allergy test kit that measures up to 132 different foods here.

Consume a whole-foods-based diet, high in deeply-pigmented fruits and vegetables, and use spices and herbs abundantly. Omega-3s are also excellent inflammation fighters, and although they are most densely concentrated in fish, I don’t recommend more than one serving of fish a week because of heavy metal contamination. Instead, focus on plant-based omega-3s such as flaxseeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, brussels sprouts, and algal oil. For added nutritional support, take a scoop of Beet Vitality every day. Beet vitality is a nutrient-rich supplement, that helps to boost immunity and fight cancer-causing free radicals, and inflammation in the body. It also helps fight aging and dramatically enhances energy and sexual virility!

Cortisol is a potent inflammation-fighting hormone and a very common (and often undiagnosed) condition called adrenal fatigue can result in a cortisol deficiency. If test results show low cortisol levels or you have adrenal fatigue symptoms such as ongoing fatigue, trouble waking up, difficulty “shutting off” at night, anxiety, mood swings, salt or sugar cravings, and low blood pressure, you should work with a functional medicine practitioner to restore adrenal function. We sell an extremely potent, naturally derived nutraceutical called Adrenal DMG, which helps to rapidly reduce adrenal fatigue symptoms. Each serving contains about 1 mg of cortisol, which can help your body fight inflammation and provide a noticeable boost in energy and vitality.

Step #3: Screening for Early Detection

Screening is another key player in prevention. It allows you to identify and treat abnormalities before they progress into cancer. Genetic testing for breast and prostate cancer is recommended. Monitoring your hormone levels is also highly beneficial, and you can purchase hormone test kits here. You may also want to monitor your blood levels of selenium, Co-Q10, and vitamins A, D, E, and C, and supplement these nutrients if necessary.

The important thing is to be aware of your body, how it functions, and how you feel each day. Pay attention to any changes in your overall health, your energy levels, your skin, and how your body reacts to normal living. We can’t avoid occasional stress, but we can change how we react to it and learn how to lower stress levels. And be sure to check with your healthcare practitioner if you have any concerns to prevent minor problems from becoming major issues. The Delgado Protocol – helping you to live longer, be healthier, and be happier!
