The Intricate & Powerful Immune System – Your Best Defense Against COVID-19

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide, as of April 7th is 1.4 million and the global death toll is 81,000. We need to stop panicking and keep this in perspective - according to the CDC, the 2019-2020 seasonal influenza caused over 29 million illnesses worldwide and 16,000 deaths in the US alone. And demographics of the most serious and fatal COVID-19 cases from around the world show they all have similar profiles - these patients are primarily over 65 with underlying diseases and immune dysfunctions. While there are some cases of younger adults who appeared healthy but have ended up in the hospital from COVID-19, this is not a random occurrence - it is indicative of an underlying immune system dysfunction.

It troubles me that the one thing that can protect us from the coronavirus – an optimally functioning immune system, is being completely overlooked by mainstream media, doctors and researchers. And it angers me that none of the trillions of tax-payer dollars spent so far on COVID-19  have gone towards supporting the innate and powerful immune response. Below I will explain the vital role of your white blood cells in immunity, how an underactive and overactive immune system leads to severe infections, the clandestine protein that is causing COVID-19 fatalities, and the simple yet powerful way to protect yourself from infectious diseases.

The Immune System Super Heros

When the immune system is functioning optimally viruses, parasites, bacteria, and other pathogens are no longer a threat because the immune system will destroy them before they can hijack the cells. One of the primary ways it does this is with white blood cells (also known as leukocytes). There are five major types of white blood cells: neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes. Neutrophils and monocytes engulf foreign pathogens and destroy them. Lymphocytes, which include the T cells and B cells, identify pathogens so that the immune system can generate specific antibodies against that particular pathogen. And natural killer cells (another type of lymphocyte) detect diseases and kill virally infected cells.

Compromised Immunity and COVID-19 Risk

Unfortunately a large proportion of people have compromised immune systems that are either underactive or overactive. When the immune system is underactive it often leads to a shortage of one or more of the immune system-supporting white blood cells, which grossly inhibits the body’s ability to defend itself from infectious diseases. This places a person at a much higher risk for contracting COVID-19 and will lead to more severe symptoms and slower recovery if they do.

Arguably even more dangerous than an underactive immune system is an overactive immune system. When this happens the immune system attacks and damages the body’s own tissues. It can also lead to a little known condition called cytokine storm – researchers now believe this condition is the primary cause of severe and fatal COVID-19 cases. Dr.Lone S. Macloud, Ph.D. of Cambridge University explains: “In the COVID-19 infection, the main issues are not brought by the virus itself, but by our bodies’ excessive immunological response to the infected organs – the cytokine storm.”

The Leading Cause of COVID-19 Fatalities

The immune system is supposed to shut off once the enemy is defeated, but according to Dr. Randy Cron (an expert on cytokine storms at the University of Alabama), in about 15 percent of people battling any serious infection, the immune system keeps raging long after the virus is no longer a threat. In these instances cytokines (signaling molecules that mediate and regulate immunity and inflammation) are continuously released in a misguided attempt to keep the body safe – this is the cytokine storm.

The cytokine storm leads to out of control inflammation and an attack on multiple organs including the lungs and liver. If the cytokine storm isn’t halted it can lead to fatal organ damage and acute respiratory distress syndrome, or ARDS, which is the primary cause of death in COVID-19 patients. Perhaps not surprisingly, research shows COVID-19 patients with symptoms that are so severe that they end up in intensive care units (ICUs) have increased concentrations of many cytokines. Cytokine storms can happen to people of any age, and this helps explain why some seemingly healthy young people are ending up with severe and fatal COVID-19 infections.

TNF – the Driving Force Behind the Cytokine Storm

Tumor necrosis factor, of TNF, is a cell signaling protein and a type of cytokine. It is a major driving force of damage in the cytokine storm and it is now believed to be the underlying cause of most severe COVID-19 reactions. The anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine helps suppress TNF and calm down the immune system, and this is likely why it has proven helpful in certain severe COVID-19 cases.  However, there are over 100 associated side-effects and risks which include permanent blindness, seizures and death. Researchers are currently studying a handful of other anti-TNF drugs as well for the treatment of COVID-19, however pharmaceutical drugs are almost always toxic and there is a risk of them suppressing the immune system too much, which can lead to potentially life-threatening secondary infections.

The Safe Solution to the Storm

In people who are healthy, the body regulates TNF levels and deactivates excess TNF before it can cause excessive inflammation and tissue and organ damage. Health is not something a drug company or vaccination can give to you, it is your day-to-day lifestyle choices that determine whether you are sick and degenerating or healthy and vital. It is imperative that we all use this time in lockdown to boost our health and get our immune systems functioning optimally – this is the best way to flatten the curve and prevent COVID-19 fatalities.
