Iodine is needed for the normal metabolism of cells. Metabolism is the process of converting food into energy. Humans need iodine for normal thyroid function, and for the production of thyroid hormones. Iodine is an essential element that enables the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones. Three iodine molecules are added to make T3 (triiodothyronine), and four for T4 (thyroxine) — the two key hormones produced by the thyroid gland so iodine is
essential to the production of these two hormones of the master gland of metabolism. There’s growing alarm worldwide about radiation exposure and poisoning. When thyroid cells absorb too much radioactive iodine — either through the air
or through contaminated food — it can increase the risk for thyroid cancer, says the American Thyroid Association. Babies and young children are at highest risk as their thyroid glands are most radiation-sensitive. People over 40 are at less risk. Reports are starting to come in of elevated radioactive iodine levels in water, milk and some food in the United States as a result of the Japanese nuclear accident. Absorbing radioactive iodine-131, which is present in the steam released from failing power plants like the ones in Japan, can cause cancer. Once breathed into the lungs or consumed by eating or drinking contaminated food or beverages, radioactive iodine travels through the body and quickly is absorbed by the thyroid gland, where it can damage DNA. The body can’t tell the difference between stable and radioactive iodine. Taking stable RAD iodine tablets with 15 mg of organic iodine can protect the thyroid from injury by “filling up” the receptor sites within two months — thus preventing it from taking up radioactive iodine.

Test for iodine, 3 capsules of RAD iodine are ingested, followed by 24 hr. urine collection. The more deficient a subject is in iodine, more iodine is retained and less is excreted in the urine. Sufficiency is achieved when 90% or more of the ingested amount is excreted in the urine. In most subjects tested, 2-3 capsules of RAD iodine/day were required to achieve whole body sufficiency within 3 months and the body retained approximately 1.5 gm iodine at sufficiency (4,8). The best response in patients with FDB was observed with ingestion of 1 capsule twice a day (8). Check with your physician for more information about the loading test.
